Democratic Alliance Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson is facing a maelstrom of criticism after it emerged that his partner, Louis Theunis Janse van Vuren, accompanied him on a taxpayer-funded trip to Brazil, despite reported warnings from legal advisers that the move was not justified.

The R839,000 trip, which included attendance at a BRICS forum, has sparked outrage among opposition parties and raised questions about the misuse of public funds. Critics argue that the inclusion of Janse van Vuren, who reportedly did not meet official requirements for the trip, is a clear example of the government's lavish spending habits.

ActionSA has called for Macpherson to personally repay the cost of the trip, stating that taxpayers should not be expected to foot the bill for ministers' partners. "This is a clear abuse of power and a slap in the face to hardworking South Africans who are struggling to make ends meet," said a spokesperson for the party.

The controversy has also raised concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability within the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. The department has yet to issue a detailed public response addressing the legality of Janse van Vuren's inclusion in the delegation or clarifying whether internal travel policies were breached.

The Brazil trip is the latest in a series of scandals surrounding government travel spending, with opposition figures highlighting the rising costs linked to ministerial trips abroad.
