GAUTENG –MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and Infrastructure Development Jacob Mamabolo has welcomed the launch of a R300-million Construction Fund aimed at giving micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the construction sector the financial and developmental boost they need to grow.

On 12 May, Mamabolo joined the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (Sedfa) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) for the fund’s launch, positioning it as a key intervention in the province’s drive to support township businesses and accelerate job creation.

“This initiative will provide financial and developmental support to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises operating within the construction sector,” Mamabolo said.

“As Gauteng Provincial Government, we welcome interventions that empower emerging contractors, support township businesses, create jobs and strengthen inclusive economic growth.”

The fund is designed to address one of the biggest barriers facing emerging contractors: access to finance and technical support. By lowering that barrier, the province hopes to see more Gauteng-based SMMEs taking part in infrastructure projects and contributing directly to service delivery.

Mamabolo stressed that construction remains central to both infrastructure delivery and economic transformation in the province.

“The construction sector remains critical to infrastructure delivery and economic transformation, and we look forward to seeing more businesses across Gauteng benefit from this important fund,” he said.

The launch forms part of Gauteng’s broader strategy under Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s 13 priority challenges, known as G13, which focuses on growing the economy, creating jobs, and tackling service delivery bottlenecks. The hashtags #GrowingGautengTogether and #TacklingG13 were used to underscore the collaborative approach.

Images from the event show Mamabolo engaging with stakeholders, alongside officials in safety gear, reflecting the practical, hands-on focus of the initiative. The fund is expected to unlock opportunities for contractors who have historically been excluded from large-scale projects, bringing township businesses into the mainstream of Gauteng’s construction economy.

For Mamabolo, the message is clear: inclusive growth happens when government opens doors and backs small business with real support.
