Deputy President Paul Mashatile has defended President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision not to take immediate action against suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu, saying the president is awaiting the final report from the Madlanga commission.

Speaking in the National Council of Provinces, Mashatile emphasized that Ramaphosa's decision doesn't mean Mchunu has escaped accountability. "The president is awaiting the report of the commission to be able to act," Mashatile said, underscoring the administration's focus on due process.

The Madlanga commission's investigation has exposed widespread corruption in the police force, prompting Mashatile to stress the need for urgent reform. "We must protect the good men and women in the SAPS by getting rid of the bad elements," he said.

Mashatile's defense of Ramaphosa comes as the ANC faces pressure to demonstrate its commitment to accountability and good governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Critics argue that the delay in acting on Mchunu raises questions about the party's resolve to tackle corruption.

The final report from the Madlanga commission is expected to shed more light on the extent of wrongdoing and potentially trigger decisive action against Mchunu and other implicated officials.
