Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego has emphasized the importance of compassion, dignity, and love in healthcare, as she celebrated Christmas with mental health care users at Hayani Specialised Hospital in Vhembe District.

In her speech, Mashego reminded attendees that healthcare is not only about treatment and medication, but also about human connection and empathy. She quoted Nelson Mandela, saying, "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others."

Mashego praised the management and staff of Hayani Specialised Hospital for their dedication and commitment to providing quality care to mental health care users. She also acknowledged the support of the Royal House, local government leadership, and partners in health, saying their involvement helps reduce stigma associated with mental illness.

The event was a celebration of the lives of mental health care users, with gifts and messages of hope and encouragement. Mashego emphasized the importance of social inclusion and emotional support in mental health recovery, quoting Professor Vikram Patel, who said, "Mental health care begins not in hospitals, but in the way society treats its most vulnerable members."

"I've seen the impact of Mashego's leadership," said Cllr Rambuda A.S., Mayor of Vhembe District. "She's a true champion of mental health, and her commitment to improving services is inspiring."

"MEC Mashego's visit meant everything to me," said Mapeu Hlanga, a mental health care user. "She showed me that I'm not alone and that I matter."

Mashego's message was clear: mental health care users deserve dignity, respect, and compassion. As she wished everyone a peaceful Christmas and a hopeful New Year, she emphasized the importance of building a caring society where mental health is treated with seriousness and compassion.
