Johannesburg - ANC regional chair Loyiso Masuku has been elected unopposed as the deputy executive mayor of Johannesburg, a move that highlights his growing influence within the party despite recent tensions with ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula.
Masuku's victory comes after he beat Mbalula's ally, Dada Morero, to become ANC regional chair, a move that sparked controversy and opposition from Mbalula. However, Masuku's leadership has been gaining momentum, and his election as deputy executive mayor is seen as a significant coup.
The role of deputy executive mayor was introduced to strengthen executive leadership, ensure continuity of governance, and enhance service delivery in the City of Johannesburg. Masuku's election is expected to bring much-needed stability and support to the mayor's office.
"Masuku's emergence as deputy executive mayor is a testament to his leadership and vision for Johannesburg," said a senior ANC official. "Despite the challenges, he has remained focused on delivering for the people, and we are confident he will excel in this new role."
Masuku's victory is also seen as a boost for the ANC in Johannesburg, which has been plagued by internal conflicts and power struggles. His leadership is expected to bring a new era of stability and cooperation to the city, and his experience as finance member of the mayoral committee (MMC) will serve him well in his new role.
As deputy executive mayor, Masuku will work closely with the executive mayor to drive service delivery and address the city's pressing challenges, including poverty, inequality, and infrastructure development. His election has been welcomed by many as a positive step forward for Johannesburg.
