In a shocking turn of events, alleged Big Five cartel leader Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala has expressed fears of incriminating himself before parliament's ad hoc committee investigating corruption in the police service.

Matlala, currently detained at C max Kgosi Mampuru correctional centre, is facing murder charges and has been refused bail due to being deemed a flight risk.

The committee is probing Matlala's relationships with prominent figures, including Northwest Businessman Brown Mogotsi and suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu, as well as allegations of instigating the disbandment of a task team investigating political killings.

Matlala is also expected to answer questions about a R360 million police healthcare contract awarded to his company, Medicare24, and his alleged involvement in the Tembisa Hospital tender scandal.

During Wednesday's proceedings, Matlala raised concerns about possibly incriminating himself, despite committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane assuring him that the rules protected him. Matlala's concerns stem from the possibility that investigators may use his testimony against him, citing anonymous sources.

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema intervened, clarifying that the evidence presented to the committee could not be used against Matlala in a criminal case. However, Matlala remains unconvinced, citing concerns about investigators manipulating the law and using his testimony against him.

The committee's investigation has shed light on the dark underbelly of corruption and organised crime in South Africa, with Matlala's testimony potentially exposing the intricate web of alliances and deceit.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: the stakes are high, and the truth is yet to be fully revealed.
