ANC's Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula.

In a shocking display of factionalism, Fikile Mbalula, the ANC's secretary-general, has warned supporters of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's presidential campaign, threatening to discipline them. However, Mbalula's actions have been widely criticized as a blatant attempt to undermine Mashatile's potential bid for the ANC presidency.

The ANC secretary-general's move comes after he failed to condemn Premier Zamani Saul and ANC Treasurer Gwen Ramokgopa for questioning the authenticity of an alleged assassination attempt on Mashatile's life. This perceived inconsistency has led many to believe that Mbalula is motivated by a desire to sabotage Mashatile's presidential aspirations.

Moreover, Mbalula's actions have been exposed as hypocritical, as some of his own supporters are calling for him to be the next ANC President on various factionalist ANC portals. These supporters are openly touting Mbalula as the ideal candidate, yet he has failed to call them to order. Instead, he seems to be allowing them to promote his potential candidacy, all while threatening to discipline Mashatile's supporters.

Critics argue that Mbalula's behavior is a clear example of factionalism and a threat to the ANC's unity. By singling out Mashatile's supporters for discipline while ignoring similar activities by his own supporters, Mbalula has demonstrated that he is more interested in advancing his own agenda than in serving the interests of the ANC.

The double standard is glaring. Mbalula's supporters are openly campaigning for him, yet he remains silent, while Mashatile's supporters are threatened with discipline for merely expressing support for their preferred candidate. This blatant hypocrisy has sparked outrage and raised questions about Mbalula's ability to remain impartial as secretary-general.

As the ANC navigates its internal dynamics, Mbalula's actions have sparked concerns about the party's future. Will Mbalula's actions succeed in crushing Mashatile's presidential aspirations, or will the Deputy President emerge stronger and more determined than ever? One thing is certain – the ANC's internal dynamics will be shaped by Mbalula's actions, and the party's future will be determined by its ability to navigate these treacherous waters.
