Former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma's attempt to have Justice Sisi Khampepe recused from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases inquiry has been dismissed.
Khampepe, who chairs the commission, rejected their claims of bias, citing unreasonable delays and lack of proper explanations.
The commission is investigating alleged interference in the prosecution of apartheid-era crimes referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) by the TRC. With this ruling, Mbeki and Zuma are expected to testify before Khampepe.
Khampepe's decision was based on three key points: the applicants' delayed action, failure to provide explanations, and the time-sensitive nature of the commission's work.
The former presidents had argued that Khampepe's past roles, including her involvement in the TRC Amnesty Committee and as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, created a conflict of interest.
