Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu told the SAPS Ad Hoc Committee investigating corruption and political interference allegations that he briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa about his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Mchunu's testimony before the committee shed light on the complexities surrounding the PKTT's disbandment. According to Mchunu, the decision was made to pre-empt potential political tensions and ensure stability within the police force.
The minister's relationship with KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been under scrutiny. Mchunu revealed that he instructed his chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, to record conversations with Mkhwanazi due to perceived threats.
Mchunu claimed Mkhwanazi made veiled threats, prompting him to take precautionary measures. The alleged threats were related to the PKTT's disbandment, with Mchunu asserting that Mkhwanazi would "fight back."
Mchunu defended the PKTT disbandment as an operational necessity, citing his mandate as police minister. He emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly and was aimed at ensuring the police force's effectiveness.
The minister took full responsibility for drafting the letter disbanding the PKTT, stating he was "sober" when making the decision.
The SAPS Ad Hoc Committee's investigation is ongoing, with Mchunu's testimony providing insight into the complexities of police operations and political interference. The committee aims to get to the bottom of the allegations and determine the facts surrounding the PKTT's disbandment.
