CAF President Patrice Motsepe has delivered a scathing response to allegations of European influence over African football, labeling such claims "absolute rubbish" and "insulting".
The controversy surrounds CAF's decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations every four years from 2028, sparking debate about external influence.
"We run Africa for Africa, and our job is to listen to people like yourself," Motsepe asserted.
He emphasized that CAF's decisions are made with Africa's best interests in mind, highlighting significant financial gains for member associations under his leadership.
"Where you are also talking absolute nonsense, is to say to me that we will run Africa for Europe, that is absolute rubbish, it's nonsense, you are insulting us," Motsepe said, dismissing allegations of European control.
Motsepe pointed to tangible progress, including increased funding for member associations, rising from $150,000 to $400,000. He introduced the African Nations League, set to kick off in 2029, and scrapped the African Nations Championship (CHAN), deemed a "spectacular money loser".
"We have to stop the inferiority complex. We must move away from the idea that FIFA controls Africa," Motsepe urged, emphasizing CAF's autonomy. He stressed that dialogue with FIFA and other global stakeholders is based on mutual respect, not subordination.
Motsepe's leadership has brought significant changes, including a new broadcasting deal and increased revenue. The African Nations League aims to enhance regional rivalries and provide more competitive matches.
The debate raises questions about CAF's decision-making process and its implications for African football.
