President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to the late Mosiuoa "Terror" Lekota, describing him as a patriot and champion of non-racial democracy, whose life was a testament to the power of courage and conviction.

Lekota, co-founder of the Congress of the People (Cope) and former defence minister, passed away at 77, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to the fight against apartheid and the pursuit of a free and equal South Africa.

Ramaphosa recalled Lekota's remarkable journey, from his early days as a student activist to his imprisonment on Robben Island, where he rubbed shoulders with Nelson Mandela and other struggle icons.

"Terror's life was one of resilience, courage, and steadfast belief in justice," Ramaphosa said. "We honour him especially for his principled dedication to non-racialism during our struggle and in a liberated South Africa."

Lekota's contributions to democracy extended beyond his activism, with roles in the United Democratic Front (UDF), the National Council of Provinces, and as premier of the Free State and defence minister.

Ramaphosa praised Lekota's intellect, personable nature, and commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, saying his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

As the nation mourns, Lekota's family, friends, and comrades take comfort in the knowledge that his impact will be felt for years to come.
