The Azanian Editor in Chief, Mpho Dube, congratulates the South African Under-20 national team on their historic win against Morocco in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
On Sunday evening in Egypt, Amajita made history by winning the U20 Afcon for the first time, beating Morocco 1-0 with a beautiful goal from star midfielder Gomolemo Kekana in the 70th minute.
Kekana's goal was a result of a long-range pass from man-of-the-match goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe, showcasing the team's exceptional skill and teamwork. This victory marks a sweet revenge for South Africa, which lost to Morocco in the 1997 Afcon final with a similar scoreline. Notably, none of the current players were born when the two nations last faced off in the final 28 years ago.
The win means Amajita will represent Africa at the U20 FIFA World Cup in Chile later this year as the champions of Africa. Coach Raymond Mdaka's confidence in his team paid off, as they demonstrated significant development and growth. Mdaka highlighted the progress made by junior teams, citing the qualification of both the Under-17 and Under-20 teams.
Amajita's journey to the final was impressive, with notable wins against Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarterfinals and Nigeria in the semifinals. The team's success is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the efforts of their coaches. Mpho Dube and the entire nation celebrate this achievement, looking forward to more triumphs in the future.
