A POWER STRUGGLE of epic proportions is unfolding in the corridors of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal, with the provincial task team's coordinator, Mike Mabuyakhulu, openly defying ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula's criticism of the team's performance.

In a scathing response, Mabuyakhulu declared that party members are loyal to the ANC, not individuals, in a clear rebuke of Mbalula's leadership. The comments come after Mbalula slammed the KZN task team's pace in addressing the party's challenges, likening it to a Toyota Tazz, saying "When I introduced the task team in February, I thought they would move like a Ferrari to fix the ANC in the province, but their pace to deal with problems resembled a Tazz."

But Mabuyakhulu turned the tables on Mbalula, praising the humble Tazz as a people's car, accessible and reliable, unlike the elite Ferrari. "The Ferrari is for a select few. It cannot drive on gravel roads; its ground clearance is too low. It cannot survive township potholes. It is too expensive. But a Tazz is a family car. A Tazz is a people's car. It is a car we are familiar with; it is not a two-seater, it carries the whole family. The masses know the Tazz. They hear about the Ferrari, but they do not know it. We may idolise the Ferrari, but we know the Tazz. It serves us," Mabuyakhulu said.

The spat highlights the deep-seated factionalism within the ANC, with Mbalula citing infighting within the task team as a major obstacle to rebuilding the party. The task team's failure to hold branch elective conferences has been attributed to dual membership issues with the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).

As the ANC grapples with its internal demons, the people of KZN are left wondering: what's next for the party and the province? Will Mbalula's leadership be able to weather the storm, or will the rebellion brewing in KZN spell the beginning of the end for the ANC's embattled SG?

One thing is certain: the ANC's KZN conundrum is far from over, and the drama is only just beginning to unfold.
