The G20 Summit in Johannesburg is facing an uncertain future as the United States has made it clear that it will oppose the issuance of a Leaders' Declaration, opting instead for a weaker Chair's Statement.

This move has dimmed the prospects of a consensus declaration, with the US citing reasons that have sparked controversy.

President Donald Trump's decision not to attend the summit, coupled with Argentina's similar stance, has raised questions about the potential impact on global governance. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, and Russian President Vladimir Putin are also skipping the summit, further complicating the situation.

Despite these challenges, South Africa remains committed to hosting a successful summit, with International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola emphasizing that preparations will continue regardless of US participation. The G20 Sherpa meeting is underway to finalize the outcome document, which is expected to focus on solidarity, equality, and sustainability ² ³.

The Johannesburg Summit's success hinges on the contributions of G7 leaders, key Global South nations, and South Africa's diplomatic efforts. As the world watches, one thing is clear: this summit will be a defining moment for Africa's role in global governance.
